Alanson George Strockbine Sr.

Alanson “George” Strockbine of Charlotte Court House, formerly of East Greenwich and Elmer New Jersey, returned home to his Creator on Friday, January 23, 2015. When he lived in New Jersey, George worked at exit 2 on the New Jersey Turnpike at the Citgo Service Center. He was also employed at Owens-Corning Fiberglass in Barrington. Even when he slowed down a bit, many stranded travelers were helped by the friendly mechanic in the tow truck. George served his community as a member of the East Greenwich Fire Department and East Greenwich Ambulance Department for many years. He also devoted 50 years of service to the Clayton Fire Company. He was a life member of the Gloucester County Fire Chief’s Association and held the position of Vice President for some time. George was an Army veteran and served in Germany during WWII, where he received his Army of Occupation and WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in March of 1947. When he moved to Virginia in 1997, he worked in the restaurant business and made sure everyone was greeted with a welcoming smile and maybe even a joke. He made everyone feel welcome. George spent his retirement building memories with his children, grandchildren, family and friends doing the things he loved. He was a big NASCAR fan and liked to attend races and events. He enjoyed camping on Skyline Drive and vacationing in Franklin Maine, and was an avid fisherman. He loved visiting the casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His big passion was trains. He traveled all over to go to train shows and events, and his pride and joy was his train display in his basement. He shared these things with the people he was closest to. George was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, and brother Jim. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sandy; a brother, Charles, many children and grandchildren as well as other family and friends who cared for him and loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 26 at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville. Burial will be held in New Jersey. Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Phenix or Charlotte Court House Fire Departments. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA, is in charge of arrangements.
