Carroll W. “Buck” Mumma, age 79, of Charlotte Court House, VA passed away on February 4, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family.
An obituary does not easily present the essence of the deceased person. Someone is much more than a collection of dates, degrees, and employment. Carroll was a unique man, a son, husband, father, teacher, friend and fierce competitor.
Born May 17, 1945 to Victor Reichard and M. Evelyn Green Mumma in Hagerstown MD. He spent his formative years in Boonesboro MD. He filled his time with Boy Scouts, riding his bike all over the county, hunting, fishing, camping and playing in the Rohrersville Band. He graduated from Boonesboro High and went on to pursue a degree in chemistry later he would obtain his masters from the University of Delaware.
As a teacher he kindled the spark in his students for a love of science. He loved teaching high school and his philosophy was if you treated students with respect and talked to them as the young adults they were, you’d never have a problem. He never did.
In summers he ran his own construction company building beautiful, affordable houses.
He worked hard and played harder. Weekends would see him load his horses and English Pointer Bird dogs heading for the nearest field trial. Over the years he raised, trained, and campaigned some amazing dogs. At the end of a long day riding, he enjoyed a good cigar and a glass of Johnnie Walker Red Scotch.
All his life he loved the ladies—young, old and in between, he could make every cashier, clerk, waitress, and librarian feel attractive and special. He was known for his jokes, quick smile and willingness to help anyone in need.
Carroll is survived by the love of his life, Jo Ann, with whom he shared thirty-six years of love, laughter, and companionship; a son, Robert Mumma and his wife, Kristy; and grandson, Jake of Elkridge, MD; a son, Adam Mumma of Charlotte Court House, VA, who he considered his best friend, Adam filled his Dad’s last years with companionship, laughter, and love. Also surviving is a brother, Alan Mumma of Mankato, MN; four fur babies, Daisy, Molly, Mandy, and Scrappy; and a grand dog Otis.
A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., on March 8, 2025, at the Old Pig, Farmville, VA. Memorial contributions can be made to Tunnels to Towers. The Browning Duffer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
