James (Jim) Mercer Garnett, Sr., “Mercer” age 86, of Charlotte Court House, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Catherine Jackson Garnett; his parents, Thomas Harwood Garnett II and Elsie Garnett; and his son, James “Jay” Mercer Garnett, Jr.
Mercer is survived by his daughter, Susanne Garnett Spivey and husband, Thomas N.C.; five grandsons, Ben Williams, Bryan Williams, James M. Garnett, III, Carson B. Garnett, and Jackson T. Garnett; one brother, Tom Garnett, and special friend, Bernardine; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth J. Ward and husband, Don; one brother-in-law, Bailey T. Jackson and wife, DeAnna; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mercer (Jim) graduated from Virginia Tech in 1960, with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He was a member of the Farmville Jaycees and the Charlotte County Lions Club. But his passion in life was farming. Mercer was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, Charlotte Court House, VA. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA is in charge of arrangements.
