Martin “Arnold” Tharpe, 84, of Charlotte Court House, VA, passed peacefully to his Heavenly home on Monday, May 17, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Inez Pace Tharpe; his brother, John William Tharpe; and best friend, William “Billy” Evans.
Arnold is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Peggy Matthews Tharpe; his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew A. and Melissa R. Tharpe; three granddaughters, Heather Tharpe Brown (Taylor), Shannon Tharpe (Travis), Allison Tharpe (Evan); one granddaughter, Kayden Reed Sands; one sister, Nancy T. Brockman (Doug); very special friends, Bert and Kathleen Mitchell; Goddaughter, Susan Mitchell Jones, Brett and Bart Mitchell; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Arnold was a dedicated member of Charlotte Court House United Methodist Church serving in many leadership roles. He was one of the original members of the Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad. Arnold retired after thirty years of service from the Virginia Department of Transportation as Maintenance Manager. Arnold was a very special person with the gift of gab, he never met a stranger. Arnold had the ability to talk with anyone and at the end of each conversation he had always made a new friend.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 20, 2021, at Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte Court House, VA. A public viewing will be held at the Browning-Duffer Funeral Home, Keysville, VA, on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider contributions to ACS/TPAC, c/o Brenda Vassar, 2915 Patrick Henry Highway, Charlotte Court House, VA 23923, as Arnold was the longest cancer survivor in Charlotte County. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA, is serving the family.
