Myrtle Lois Comstock Hurt Hay

d. February 20, 2025

Myrtle Lois Comstock Hurt Hay of Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Keysville, VA, and daughter of the late Lelia Baker Comstock and the late Everette E. Comstock of Charlotte Court House, VA, died on February 20, 2025 at the age of 99. In addition to her parents and her brother, William C. Comstock of Petersburg, VA, she was predeceased by her husbands, John R. (Ray) Hurt of Keysville, VA, William W. Gray of Petersburg, VA, and Captain Lorin W. Hay, USN (Ret.) of Virginia Beach, VA.

Surviving to cherish her life are her children, Lorraine H. Tucker (Bill) of Jacksonville, FL, John R. Hurt, Jr. of Keysville, VA, and Rebecca H. Kaufman (Larry) of Harrisonburg, VA; her granddaughter, Suzanne Hurt; and great-grandson, Ryder Wells both of Telluride, CO. Also surviving are extended family members Lorin D. Hay, Karen A. Hay, Susan Hay, grandchildren, Lorin W. and Mary. She is also survived by many relatives including a special niece, Lynn Comstock, of Wilson, NC.

Lois grew up in Charlotte County and graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1942. After working and living in Richmond, VA for several years, she and her husband, Ray Hurt, returned to Keysville to operate Taylor’s Drug Store from 1953-1986. Besides raising three children, she was very active in the community and was a member of the Keysville Garden Club and several bridge clubs. Those interests remained with her throughout her life wherever she lived. She was always willing to try new activities, to meet people and to travel. She never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with almost anyone. These traits generated many friends over the years; so much so, that neighbors in her subdivision of Chesopeian Colony in Virginia Beach elected her to be Grand Marshall of the annual Fourth of July parade in 2018. Caring friends also built a special seating area in the subdivision named “Lois Landing” with a bench to sit on when she would go for a walk. Her exuberance and love of life endeared her to many, and she will always be remembered for her positive attitude and loving smile.

The family gratefully thanks Seble Lemma and her team of caregivers and also Westminster Hospice for the loving care provided to our mother during her final years. We also offer heartfelt thanks to her neighbors and special friends Mike and Martha Swirzinski.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday March 1, 2025 at Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte Court House, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in her name. The family is being served by Browning Duffer Funeral Home, Keysville, VA.
