THOMAS MICHAEL JONES, 62, of Charlotte Court House, Virginia, passed away peacefully at University of Virginia Medical Center on July 14, 2024 after a valiant battle with sepsis and its complications. Mike, as his friends knew him, is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jennifer Jones, and their sons, Thomas Benjamin Jones, 15, and Samuel Henry Jones, 12; his mother-in-law, Susan LeLacheur, his brother-in-law, Scott LeLacheur (Suzzy); and his lifelong friends, Hoyt Alford (Mary), Paul Macek (Barbara), David Dodson (Laurie), and Terry Bartlett. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas William Jones and Maria Martinez Jones, by his father-in-law, Stephen LeLacheur, and by his aunt, Rebecca Dix.
Mike is a graduate of Keysville Elementary School and Prince Edward Academy, where he graduated in 1979. In 1983, Mike went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in government and economics from the College of William & Mary. Mike attended law school at George Mason University School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1986. Mike worked first as a probation officer in community corrections with Piedmont Court Services in Farmville and later with Piedmont Court Services in Boydton. In 2004, Mike joined the Mecklenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. In 2005, he returned to his Charlotte County roots when he joined the law practice of Pettus, Tyler & Jones, P.C., where he began his career as a criminal defense attorney. In 2009, Mike opened The Jones Law Firm, P.C., with his wife, Jennifer, where he worked diligently to represent his clients and was known for his tenacity and persistence in court.
Mike and Jennifer welcomed their first child, Ben, in 2009. Sam followed three years later. Mike’s pride in his children was evident in every story he told and pictures he shared of the boys. Mike’s stories about the boys usually started with “let me tell you about the boys” and usually ended with him beaming with pride at their accomplishments. Mike’s family was a constant source of joy and support for him and he loved spending time with them.
Mike was an avid collector of World War II memorabilia and enjoyed reenacting World War II history, having learned his love of American history from his father who had been a fighter pilot during the War. Mike especially loved military battles and was thrilled when he had the opportunity to draw out the first United States battle in the Pacific at Guadalcanal with Sam. Mike was also a firm believer in the Second Amendment and could argue its merits for hours, if you let him. Mike had a wry sense of humor and a quick smile. He was a good friend to all and will be sorely missed.
In 2015, Mike suffered a heart attack and required open-heart surgery. Through the subsequent years, Mike continued to deal with issues related to his health. After a brief illness, Mike passed on July 14, 2024, surrounded by those he cherished.
A memorial service will be held at Browning-Duffer Funeral Home on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad. The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home in Keysville, VA, is serving the family.
